Updated online trademark application system: here’s what’s new

The updated version of our online trademark application system will go live 1 June 2023. This message tells you about the changes that have been made.

Three people in an office

The most important point actually is that we have rebuilt the system in new technology, which gives us more flexibility to make adjustments. It means we can meet the requirements of our users faster and more easily. You will not notice much about the new technology in itself, except that it can now be used on mobile devices. One change you will notice, however, is improved functionality when adding products and services.

New when adding products and services

  • When searching based on your product or service, you will first see results based on AI. This will also give you suggestions about possible neighbouring products or services. Of course, you can still view and select the results found for each class.
  • When you submit products and services manually, the system verifies which terms have already been validated based on the Harmonized Database (HDB). For terms that are not in the HDB, the system automatically suggests similar or alternative terms.
  • You can also compile a list yourself in advance through TMclass. Then import your list into the system as a .txt-file using the ‘Upload your list’ option in Step 2.

Other improvements

Now that the system has been moved over to new technology, we are also able to make other improvements more easily. We will keep you informed about these through our website and our newsletter for IP professionals

Other systems will also be updated this year. These are the systems for:

  • design applications
  • filing oppositions
  • reporting changes (transfer, change in name and/or address, nomination or change of agent).

Cooperation with EUIPO

This new system has been created in collaboration with EUIPO. Through BOIP and EUIPO's ongoing cooperation under the European Union Intellectual Property Network, we aim to better meet our customers' needs and simplify and streamline their experience across the EU.
