Tackling the issue of water worldwide or enabling early detection of cancer: these are just two examples of major social challenges being worked on by the winners of the WIPO Global Awards 2022. WIPO – the World Intellectual Property Organisation – will be presenting the Global Awards this year too.
Is your business making smart use of intellectual property (IP)? Are you contributing to society in a positive way through innovation and creativity? If so, then nominate your business. You have up to and including 31 March 2023 to do so.
What awaits the winners?
The winners of the WIPO Global Awards will naturally be invited to the awards ceremony, which will be held at the WIPO headquarters in Geneva in July 2023. Together with the trophy, winners will be presented with a personalized mentorship program aimed at, for example, facilitating access to funding and partnership opportunities. On top of that, the winners will, of course, benefit from the worldwide PR and attention.
So how do you go about nominating your business?
You can self-nominate if you meet the following requirements:
- You are the owner of an SME, or you are an inventor/creator;
- You use IP to achieve your business goals;
- With your skills, technology or creative content you contribute to positive change in the world and in the lives of others.
SME participants must furthermore also meet the following three requirements:
- Your business must be established in one of the 193 WIPO member states;
- Your business has no more than 300 employees;
- The total annual turnover of your business is no more than 15 million dollars.
There are different categories for nomination: ‘Enterprises’ or ‘Women’ or ‘Youth’. One winner will be selected for each category by an independent jury of experts.

Who is organising the awards?
The WIPO Global Awards is an annual competition in which businesses from all over the world can take part. WIPO – the World Intellectual Property Organisation – launched the Global Awards in 2022. The awards aim to shine the spotlight on and reward entrepreneurs who make smart use of their intellectual property rights to do business successfully. With these awards WIPO also aims to ensure that innovation is supported inclusively throughout the world.
