Benelux Day 2024: celebrating an historic milestone

On 5 September 2024, for the first time, we celebrate Benelux Day – a day marking the strong ties that exist between Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. This celebration falls on the same day as the 80th anniversary of the Benelux Customs Agreement, a milestone in the mutual cooperation between our three countries. Read more about the significance of this day and the important role BOIP plays in this cooperation below.

Why 5 September?

5 September was not simply chosen at random. On this day in 1944, even before our countries had been completely liberated, the governments of the three Benelux States in exile signed the Netherlands–Belgium–Luxembourg Customs Convention in London. This treaty is regarded as the start of the mutual cooperation between the Benelux States, cooperation which has only grown stronger since. Eighty years later, the links between those States are still of major importance for the region.

Strengthening Benelux cooperation

In 1958, mutual cooperation was further strengthened by the signing of the Benelux Treaty, which lead to the establishment of the Benelux Economic Union. That treaty laid down the basis for further economic integration and a shared approach to trade and regulation. Today, this cooperation remains essential for the economic growth and stability of the region.

BOIP’s role in economic integration

Mutual cooperation in the Benelux has not only produced economic benefits; it has also led to close legal and cultural ties. One important result of this cooperation was the establishment of the Benelux Trademark Office in 1971, now known as the Benelux Office for Intellectual Property (BOIP).

BOIP plays a crucial role in protecting trademarks and designs of entrepreneurs who are active in the Benelux. Harmonisation of these rights in the Benelux makes it easier for businesses to protect their intellectual property and take action against infringement.

The first edition of the Benelux Day

Benelux Day is an initiative of four Benelux institutions:

  • The Benelux General Secretariat
  • The Benelux Interparliamentary Assembly (the Benelux Parliament)
  • The Benelux Court of Justice
  • BOIP.

The first edition of the Benelux Day, on 5 September 2024, not only marks the past 80 years of mutual cooperation; it is also a celebration of the progress we have made together. Let's be proud of what we have achieved and continue building close cooperation for the future.
